The Church Organ Print E-mail

When the plans for the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Cape Colony in Southern Africa was drawn in 1924, space was made for a pipe organ. Since such a commodity for a poor congregation would have been quite a burden if they had to incur such a debt realising the amount need was over 9000 pounds.

The only way this amount could be raised was to have people subscribe to have their names engraved on the pipes of the organ when the organ was installed. The congregation was the only congregation in the whole of South Africa , who were not of the white race, to be the proud owners of an electronic pipe organ made overseas.

One of the persons, Mrs. Hilda Adriaanse, who sang in the choir at the inauguration of the organ is still with us today although physically indispose, remembers with pride of that day. Noted musicians from the City of Cape Town and even the City organist of Cape Town, Mr. Keith Jewell have brought with music for it.
